What is the purpose of a Gas Meter?
A gas meter is a device used to measure the amout or volume of gas being used as it passes through the meter. Commonly found at residentail addresses, the gas meter reading is used by energy companies to determine how much gas has been used so they can bill their customer.
Gas meters are also used in industrial and commercial applications to accurately measure the amount of gas being used.
Are there different types of gas meters?
There's a number of different types of gas meters with the most common being diaphragm, turbine and rotary.
- Diaphragm Gas Meter: is a positive displacement instrument featuring a flexible membrane or diaphragm to accurately measure the volume of gas it displaces through each stroke of the diaphram. The diaphragm meter is accurate and reliable, especially at low flow rates becasue of its positive displacement characteristics.
- Turbine Gas Meter: is a velocity meter that works on the principle of turbine rotation. Turbine gas meters feature turbine blades that rotate as gas flows past the blades, the faster the gas or fluid moves, the faster the turbine blades turn.
- Rotary Gas Meter: is a displacement type gas meter that measures the volume of gas the passes between 2 impellors (or rotors). With each rotation of the impellors, a known and identical volume of gas is displaced from the inlet of the meter to the outlet. Rotary gas meters can measure higher pressures and volumes than diaphragm type meters.
